NEW WATERS ACQUITY UPLC SYSTEM INCREASES ENTHALPY SAMPLE CAPACITY
– New separation technology interfaces with API-5000 LC/MS/MS to
reduce runtime and increase chromatographic resolution.
Enthalpy Analytical, Inc., a growing mid-sized bioanalytical laboratory
in Durham, NC has installed a new Waters ACQUITY UPLC system.
The Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography system interfaces with
an Applied Biosystems API-5000™ LC/MS/MS unit to reduce runtimes
and increase chromatographic resolution and sensitivity.
“The benefit of the new UPLC system was immediately apparent when
a pharmaceutical company asked us to improve the runtimes of a method
for clinical study samples,” said Bioanalytical Division Director
Mike Allen, “A large CRO worked for months to develop a method that
required 25 minutes per sample. The client was unhappy because labs
charge more for methods with long runtimes, so they contacted me.
I thought the Waters UPLC would be the perfect tool for this project
and, in just two days, was able to develop a method on the UPLC
with a runtime of less than 5 minutes.”
The UPLC system joins recent technology acquisitions by Enthalpy
including a Hamilton MicroLab Star liquid handler that provides
increased sample handling capacity and three additional API-5000™
units. With the additional instruments, the company now operates
eight Applied Biosystems LC/MS/MS systems.
The Waters UPLC installation highlights Enthalpy’s commitment to
meeting challenging schedules. The lab’s business strategy, which
it calls “The 70% Solution,” is to hold scheduled projects at 70%
of capacity to ensure resources are available for meeting client
timelines. Since opening its bioanalytical division in 2003, Enthalpy
has not missed a client deadline.
“We are adamant about keeping capacity ahead of increasing demand
and committed to meeting deadlines,” says Todd Grosshandler, Enthalpy
Co-founder and Vice President. “We developed The 70% Solution with
input from numerous sponsors who complained of backlogs and slow
turnaround in the bioanalytical industry.”
In addition to leading-edge technology, Enthalpy’s approach includes
a senior scientist as a single point of contact, frequent project
updates and results that are on or ahead of schedule. Enthalpy’s
growing client list includes both large and small pharmaceutical
development companies.
